First: multiply the 1st & 3rd term to get 60. find two numbers that give you 60 when multiplied & (-61) when added/subtracted. the numbers are (-1 & - 60). Rewrite the expression with the new middle terms.

x^2 - 1x - 60x + 60

Sec: with 4 terms - group "like" terms & factor both sets of parenthesis.

(x^2 - 1x) - (60x + 60)

x(x - 1) - 60(x - 1)

Third: make sure the inner terms are the same. combine the inner term (once) with the outer term.

(x - 1)(x- 60)

You have a positive third term and a negative middle term so we'll have a minus in each of the factors: (x - ?)(x - ?)

Now you want two numbers whose product is 60 and whose sum is 61. So 60 and 1 are the obvious choices:
(x - 60)(x - 1)

I don't know why some people insist on the quadratic forumula for problems like these.

Furthermore, I don't know why some are saying "x= 1 or 60". There's no equation here, folks. Just an quadratic expression!

I'm assuming x2 is x squared? Ok the lets do this x2 + 5x + 12x + 60 Use parenthesis to break down a little (x2 + 5x) + (12x + 60) Factor an x out of the first part x(x + 5) + (12x + 60) Factor 12 out of the second equation x(x + 5) + 12(x + 5) The numbers in parenthesis conveniently come out the same so we can rearrange it like so. (x + 12) ( x + 5) (If you don't believe me foil it out) Thus giving yout he zeroes of the function x= -12, -5 Cheers!

x^2 - 61x + 60
(-1) + (-60) = -61 and (-1) (-60) = 60
so use -1 and -60
(x - 60) (x - 1)
FOIL first, outer, inner, last
(x^2 - 1x - 60x + 60)
-1x + -60x = -61x
(x^2 -61x + 60)
so your answer is (x - 60) (x - 1)
I hope that makes sense to you
