Wi-Fi is wireless networking, a.k.a networking without wires.

As far as price goes it depends on what wireless protocol you want to use.

The most expensive is the 802.11n equipment. A 802.11n router will on average cost you over a $120.00 and the wireless adapters will cost around $50 to $80. 802.11n networking speeds are advertised as fast as 300Mb/s.

The next in price is 802.11g equipment. A 802.11g router will on average cost you about $40 to $80 depending on what bells and whistles are on the router, such as USB ports or built in print servers, and the wireless adapters will cost about $20. 802.11g networking speeds are advertised as fast as 108Mb/s if you use special speed boosting technology, but on average operate at 54Mb/s.

The lowest cost out there is 802.11b equipment. I do not believe new 802.11b equipment is not being made by companies any longer, but can still be bought, especially on Ebay. You should be able to get a 802.11b router for around $10 to $20 and the wireless adapters for around $5 to $10. 802.11b networking speeds go up to 11Mb/s.

I wont go into 802.11a since it is pricey, does not work that great and is not compatable with the other 3 types I already listed above.

As for installing them if you read the install guides that come with the equipment you should have no problems, just read and do.
Basically you have a wireless router which is the center of your wireless network. You do the configuration just like the install guide tells you. Then you install wireless adapters in all the computers you want to wirelessly connect.
If you hav a broadband internet connection you plug the broadband modem into the routers WAN port and configure it just like the install guide says to.

You will then have to configure each computer and there firewalls for the network connection and sharing pf files and printers.

Thats about it......
