im trying to use a kit to get the mirror mounted again but first, the button needs to be separated from the mirror. anyone have any help about getting it off?

It either has a set-screw somewhere or you have to insert a thin screwdriver in between the button and the base and release a tab.

To remove the metal button from the mirror you need to use a small flat head screwdriver. There should be a small opening between the button and the mirror carefully push the screwdriver end into the gap you should feel a metal tab push on the tab that should release the mirror.

Some of those mirror buttons are held to the bracket by a small set screw with an allen head screw and some are held on by a spring clip on the bracket...if there's no screw, you'll have to take a small slotted screwdriver and gently pry the button off the bracket. If you look closely, there are grooves on the side of the bracket that the button slides into and you want to pry the button down these grooves or wedges.

You will need a #20 TORX driver to remove the slug from the mirror assembly.

there is a screw or pin hole to remove it see if you can find it and remove it....if not you can pick up a new mirror for about 10 bucks at you local auto parts store.
