On a personal note, I've been around family friends who owned guns to trapshoot and go hunting.. I even had a 4-10 when I was 12 years old. Not all gun owners are irresponsible owners. Banning guns is kind of like banning cars 'cause too many people get in car accidents each year.

I didn't personally write the following paragraphs but I agree with what this woman had to say.. Someone please give her a medal :)

We Americans are a country awash in weapons. High-powered hunting rifles, shot-guns, and pistols of virtually every description. We are also a country with an extremely high violent gun crime rate. On the surface it is quite easy for some to say, “If there were not as many guns, there would not be as much gun crime.” I understand and to some degree even echo these sentiments; however, it is the Right of the Individual to own these weapons. It is also the Responsibility of the Government to prosecute those who commit violent gun crimes. The Second Amendment to the US Constitution secures for us, the common people, this Right.
SECOND AMENDMENT: A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.
Am I going to go rob a bank and commit gun crime simply because I own guns? No. Does the fact that I own these weapons make me anymore likely to become a criminal? No. There is an old adage, ‘When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.’
It is the citizen’s Right to own guns. Relieving the citizen of this Right will not affect gun crime in the least. It will perhaps give the criminal even more desire to perpetuate criminal activity knowing that the populace is unarmed.
About 3753 abortions per day...are we to outlaw abortion therefore?
The same exact argument can be used for guns. Are we to outlaw guns therefore? Or is it a matter of tougher penalties for gun crimes? Perhaps better education for gun owners?
Many people die in this country every year. Murderers are capable of using weapons other than guns to kill. If a person is truly suicidal...a lack of guns will not deter him.
The solution to violent gun death in America is NOT removing the 2nd Amendment from the Constitution and banning gun ownership. A better long-term solution would more likely be found in better education and in tougher gun crime penalties.

Emotionally people like Cho are, in fact, NOT allowed to purchase handguns. So, how did he acquire them? By someone else's mistake. And speaking of killing with a knife, remember 9/11? The terrorists took over three planes with box cutters. So, a knife can be just as effective as a firearm. And, you canNOT just walk into a legal, legitimate gun store and buy one. Every state has a waiting period between purchase and pickup. Also, even if guns are made illegal it would be as effective as the fact that cocaine and marijuana are illegal, I mean no one uses or gets their hands on those drugs do they, since they are illegal? If guns were made illegal, then only persons willing to break the law would have them and be able to use them. I personally have been around guns all my life and never ever fired a weapon at anyone who was not already shooting at me first. [served in Desert Shield/Storm] And, lastly, if you want to change a law, get elected and write a bill and make it a law. Everyone is allowed to run for an elected office. Well, except for President of the US, then you have to have been born a US citizen. But, last I heard Senators and Representatives also get to make laws too, and anyone can get elected to those positions. Amended after receiving an e-mail: 9/11 terrorists took over three not four planes. The people on the fourth plane did something another answerer mentioned: they fought back. So, maybe I should rephrase what I typed earlier to read "took over and successfully crashed into their targets with ... "

I think that this is a debate which will never have a right or wrong answer. I would say no, because there is always going to be crime and senseless killings, which only gets exacerbated by the 'right to bear arms' but it's a double edged sword, as if people had guns, they could defend themselves from these thigns. I live in Australia, and our gun laws were tightened up considerably after the Port Arthur massacre where 35 people were killed and 37 people were injured, and these days you do hear of people getting shot occasionally, but nowhere near what we hear of in the U.S.A. I think that the high pwered weapons that are used in all of these shooting rampages that we hear of should not be accessable by the general public, that is just an accident waiting to happen, but this debate will go on and on and on.....

As a gun owner, and target shooter, I'd say no. My question to those who want to take away the guns, is how can you ever be sure of getting them all? You have great grandpa's locked up and forgotten in a trunk in somebody's attic. You have the war souvenirs, which were brought back. You also have the ones illegally owned by the "gangbangers", which will never be turned in. Making them illegal, just makes honest people into criminals.

Absolutely not. That is a right that this country is founded upon. Also, guns are tools. They are turned into weapons by idiots. Besides, making them illegal won't get rid of the problems. It will only make them worse. After all, drugs are illegal too.

Why do people keep saying you have a right to own a gun. You all need to go back and reread that line. Right to bar arms; part ; another part. This so called right is 9/10 of the law and thus you have that so called right because it has not been challenged.

ALL automatic and semi-automatic weapons need to be banned YESTERDAY!! Hunting rifles and such are not the problem. Everyone should have one!
The guns which expel mega rounds per minute for the sake of killing PEOPLE need to be outlawed once and for all.
Nobody is going hunting and bringing down bambi with an AK-47! The people who insist on using those, are "people hunting" and that's always in season!

No, but the right to shoot a gun should be restricted using electronic protection features. You have the right to own a gun but not to use it illegally. Do you want to protect against a criminal who uses a gun to kill you? You may not be able to defend yourself when your sleeping. A gun under your pillow makes you feel better, but are you really safer?

NO! Believe it or not, guns make our society safer. If a criminal wants a gun to commit a crime, they will get it! Trust me, they will get it! Countless times, an honest gun carrying citizen has stopped violence because of their fire arm. Shots do not even need to be fired. As long as there is a "show of force", 8 times out of 10, the criminal will retreat.

It would be too difficult to ban guns now. I don't see how you could feasibly ensure everyone gave up their guns.
Perhaps the best way to restrict gun ownership would be to enforce the existing laws and bolster them where necessary. It would be a long process and extremely unpopular.
