12-7x+28+x = -2
40-6x = -2
-6x = -42
x = 7

12 - 7(x-4) + x = -2
12 - 7x + 28 + x = -2
-6x + 40 = -2
-6x = -42
x = 7

First we will combine terms on each side of the equation
12-7x+28+x = -2
40 - 6x = -2

Now subtract 40 from both sides
-6x = -42

Multiply both sides by -1
6x = 42

Then x = 7
