how tight are the rocker arms in your cars engine supposed to be tightened down? 1 or 2 of mine are loose and making a tapping sound but i dunno how much to tighten them. It is an 84 chevy S-10 2.8L / 173Ci V6

If these are hydraulic lifters, take them to zero slack, and tighten 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Make sure you're on the base circle of the cam when you do this. (Where the valves are supposed to be closed. You can do that by seeing that the distributer "pointer" is aimed at the spark plug outlet for that cylinder; that means it's on the compression stroke.)

p.s. If you're able to run the engine with the valve covers off, you can do this by tightening the rocker arm while the engine is running till it stops clattering, then go 1/2 turn more...

I agree with the first comment but would add if they loosened up by themselves, you should replace the rocker arm jam nuts to prevent this from happening again. And , you may want to check the lash on the remaining rocker arms if you do it while it's running...same thing, loosen the nuts till the arms clatter and then tighten till they stop and go 1/2 more turn.
