I just asked a question recently about setting up a multiplayer game on diablo with two computers running on the same modem. I was told to try a program called hamachi to set up a lan but it is not working. The game keeps saying it does not detect a lan, but it also says the lan needs to be ipx compatable to work. I am new to setting up a local area network and need to know how to set one up that is ipx compatable, whatever that is. If anyone can help with this or even point me in the right direction on where I can find instructions on how to do this, I would really appreciate it. Thank you an advance to anyone who can help =)

You need to install the IPX protocal on your network, on each computer, to get your game running. See the instruction below.

NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol

-Open Network Connections
-Right-click a local area connection, the network connection you want to run the game on, and then click Properties.
-On the General tab, click Install.
-In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Protocol, and then click Add.
-In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, click NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol, and then click OK.

Misc Notes
To open Network and Dial-up Connections, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.
You must be a member of the Administrators group to install NWLink.
When you install NWLink, it is installed for all your connections. If you do not want NWLink installed for a certain connection, right-click that connection, click Properties and, on either the General or Networking tab, clear the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol check box.
To confirm that NWLink is working properly, at a command prompt, type ipxroute config. You should see a table with information about the bindings for which NWLink is configured.

All you need is two computers connected to a router. The with the one "hosting" the game, get it's ip address, then have the other computer "connect" to it by that ip address. That's it.
I had 2 xp computers without installing ipx working fine with diablo 2. If you are really running the original diablo, then you would have to add ipx to each computer. That's going to control panel... network connections.. properties of the local area connection, then adding the protocol ipx.

IPX is Ethernet protocol

To install it under XP

Network connections--> your LAN card properties --> install --> protocol --> IPX
