Yes, I do this all the time. My husband is a nurse at a local hospital on the ICU floor they hang them in the rooms. Also I put fabric softener sheets through out my house too.
One time I bought a two drawer table @ a rummage sale and it smelled like smoke I put fabric softener sheets in the drawers I had to change them quite often but it did take the smoke smell out of the table.

It will probably work similar to lavender bags because the soap is perfumed. You should wrap the soap otherwise it could rub off onto clothes or chip.

Also you can hang them in your closet, makes all your clothes smell good.Plus it will make your room smell clean
