It's so frustrating that people won't fight for this country. We have all been sold out for so many years. Our leaders tell us if the Dow is up we must have a stronger economy. Our jobs our leaving at a record pace. Illegals taking over the country. Our brave troops fighting for what they think is democracy while our rights are taken away at home. A once great nation is so in debt and crumbling away at every corrupt agency. National guard used to fight a war while our borders are open to drugs, crime and illegals. We are offered the same choice of politicians and anyone that would stand against them and for America is quickly put down in the press. This is what our schools have turned out, non thinkers for big brother.

To a certain extent we have always been complacent. Compared to other industrialized nations, we have few who really care about the electoral process, and probably have one of the lowest participation rates among eligible voters. There has been, for many years, apathy, if not antipathy, towards elections.

Americans, especially after Watergate, have had distrust with our electoral system, from national to local elections. Outside of the numerous scandals that seem to be an ever increasing scourge on both parties, as the years pass by, what really has Americans disenchanted with the enterprise of voting people into office is that the people who they elect into office almost invariably renege on their campaign promises. It doesn’t matter whether you are Republican or Democrat, both parties bend over backward to appease their conservative and liberal base respectively. Yet, when they get into office, they move so much towards the center on most policies, so as to garner the greatest support that they do not end up signing into law any of the sweeping reforms they promised while they were on the campaign trail.

Many outside our country look at the failure of the American electoral system as attributable to American laziness and lack of interest in politics. I think the answer lies in the fact that our two parties, which dominate the electoral system, have become similar to each other in ideology, that most sensible Americans see it almost as a one party system. Hence, the reasoning goes, what is the point in voting?

The only way to rekindle American interest in their government is for there to be strong grass roots support for viable third and fourth parties. Just as in business, the only way to ensure that healthy competition exists, and thus in turn resulting in greater service to the public, is for the public to demand greater competition. This country extols the greatness of supply, demand, and the competition for that demand as the cornerstones of capitalistic success. It’s time we apply those same principles to politics as well.

You make a good point.

Because of this period of high technology and instant information, more than ever, the people are made aware of the indiscretions and inconsistancies of our political representatives.

However, many people are content (not necessarily happy, but content) with their daily lifestyles, and are too busy focusing on their microcostic world, to be motivated enough to possibly disrupting their little world to attempt to change the fact that many of our representatives are self-serving and corrupt.

There are also many of our people who believe that in speaking out against our politicians, i.e. GW Bush, the speaker is unpatriotic and Un- American; when in reality, the speaker is mere exercising his First Amendment right to voice his opinion concerning his views of the politician's performance.

There are also many people who do not believe that one person can make a difference; thus, they do not even try to change things.

As Stan Lee stated in "Spiderman III," "One person can make a difference. 'Nuff said!"

Without advocating that people open their windows and yell, a la "Network": I'm mad as Hell, and I am not going to take it anymore; the least people can do is email or write to their representatives, i.e. state senators, Congressmen, governors, and President, and let them know their opinion of the politician's performance, and what can be done to remedy the problems caused by the politician's actions.

"'Nuff Said!"

To some degree we are. Expecially with the politicians being corrupt! I am always saying they always have been and always will be so what are you going to do. I think as a nation we are always pretty comfortable so it's easy to become complacent.

You obviously want answers that will dump on our current president but I'm going a step further...politicians aside, most AMERICANS are all becoming complacent, self-indulged, fat, lazy and intolerant! We, as a nation, need to "get in shape".

We got this way because those in power have programed most of us to be that way by giving us things, making training us to not be able to live with out it and then threaten to take it away if we don't do what they say. I always say the most dangerous man is a man who has nothing but his soul. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Clearly the greatest decay of this country is not from gay marriage, abortion, or anything that the neocons use to support the family values claim. They rot the guts of this country from the top down.

Yes, good point.
AMERICA WAS DOOMED when the Democrat Party discovered that it could bribe voters with their own money, that the Democrats had taken away from them in taxes.
Democrats Know: "Tax a lot, Give a little back, and the ignorant will vote for you every time".
Cool!!!!!!!

Amazingly enough, we have. We are faced with deadly and numerous external enemies, yet we continue the ritualized civil war of partizan politics as if we were in no real danger.
