There is a small grey lizard doing what appears to be push ups on my back deck. Is he exercising? or something else?

I'm guessing you're in Florida and it's a cuban anole doing pushups and flashing his dewlap (red thing under his throat). Look around, there's more lizards, either smaller females that he's trying to attract as mates, or another male that he's posturing with... again... trying to attract mates and ward off rival males. Lizards rarely do things like this for no reason... it -is- spring, after all.

He's trying to attract a mate. I know because I own crickets for my lizard. They do those push-ups when they are attracting mates. They do it ALL the time. Bye.

The lizard is circulating air under its body to help keep cool. They do this often when they are in the sun.

Research observations have shown that push up behavior is likely territorial not aggression or mating behavior
