It seems that where ever the English go they are not welcome. I can go anywhere in the world and say I'm from the UK and I don't get a warm welcome but the second I say I'm Scottish not English they are offering me drinks and women start talking to me.
Also in the eurovision song contest the UK never seems to do well.
Is it the simple fact that Europe does not like the English or is it because of the UK friendship with America.
After all from what I have heard the English and American are the two most hated countries in the world.
Why is that?

There was a thing on Channel 4, can't remember the name of it something like the seven sins of England or something. Anyways it says England was called the most hated country in the world back in the 16th century.
So it's not a new thing, just wondering why it still happens around europe

Whilst there are some things about England to dislike, there must be something good about the Country otherwise people wouldn't risk life and limb to come and live here when they are fleeing adverse situations, they would go somewhere else.
That being said I think people view the English as crass, superior and unwilling to learn any other language and complain about the foreigners and foreign food when they are on holiday (when in fact they are the foreigners) that will never win you any friends. That's not to say that all English people are like that but once you gain a bad reputation it kind of stays with you no matter what.

There is a contention that is going long ago. In 1066 the Norman French defeated the English on the Battle of Hastings. From that factor at the French had been obvious because the overlords. In time, the Kings in England attempted to say lands again in France (This was once the one hundred years conflict.) All by way of historical past the French and English languages had been competing to grow to be the worldwide language--most likely in these days English has received. But take into account, the 2 international locations fought in combination in the course of the 2 global wars, and I suppose any hostility in these days is fairly playful and no longer hateful.

I am an English bloke living in quite a cosmopolitan ski resort in France.
The most hated nation here seem to be the Germans, not the English.
English get bad press because they:
1.don't make much attempt to speak foreign languages
2. drink too much
3. are too noisey
4. complain about things being 'foreign'
embarrassing isn't it? however I know from speaking to pubs and businesses here that the British spend more than any one else, come back time after time and ..... love the weather!

I'm an American, who has been to 6 countries in Europe total. Out of those, I would have to say that the French are the least pleasing to AMERICANs, but to people in general- I would agree with the British.
Every resturaunt I went to in France, they knew I was American because of the group I was with- and they looked down upon me without saying a word. But in the streets, people were very polite.
In England, people are rude in general. It's like the New York City of Europe.

Living in Europe I have to say yes it is. The reason is i believe because they support the Usa, Before US became number one power, England Use to be. as far as Eurovision which was held tonight, they finished in Last spots.
They never do well and i beliebe it has to do with their political ideas, and because they disagree usually with France and Germany.the winner in eurovision was Serbia.

not sure about europe but some people especially old-timers hate English here in India that's due to colonial rule and the stories doing the rounds - but not so, the younger generation.

The English don't consider themselves European...probably part of the reason the rest of Europe hates them so much.

Oh really? I have never thought of it like that, but it kind of seems true now that you mention it. I am American, so obviously I don't hate the UK, but I don't know.
