C U N T

C u n t is an English vulgarism most commonly used in referring to the vulva, the vagina, the clitoris, and, more generally, the pubis, from the mons veneris to the perineum. The earliest citation of this usage, circa 1230, is in the Oxford English Dictionary, referring to the London street known as "Gropecunt Lane"; as the word "c u n t" has been incorporated into the colloquial and technical speech of nautical and other occupational traditions.

Generally, c u n t is considered an obscene word and, therefore, greatly offensive; although, as with all verbal profanities, some speakers regard it as merely informal. Calling someone 'a c u n t' is generally considered very offensive unless you are quite familiar with that person. A comparable slang term for the part of the anatomy is pussy, specifically used to refer to the vulva and the vagina, but its meaning differs than that of **** when used to refer to a person.

'C u n t' sometimes is used as a unspecific derogatory epithet in referring to either sex (in Australian English, specifically male; the Macquarie Dictionary defines **** as "a despicable man"), in which case the usage is synecdoche.
