Not so much Zhu De, he was a military leader, but Lin Biao - he was more of a politician and favored to succeed Mao after his death.

Are you talking about Mao Tse Tung (the Communist revolutionary leader of China?) Most likely the answer to your question would be Zhu De. Zhu joined his own army with Mao's and supported the future chairman in every way.
