My friend and I are trying to get a 2-year retired computer up and running and we forgot the password so we started up dos and we see the hard drive. What files do we need to access to get past the password? We're running windows 2000 and we are in desperate need of help. And if anyone can find out how to override the password that would be greatly appreciated.

You can try the escape key. You can also try a null password. A lot of users will have a null password for the Admin account. A reinstallation of Windows 2000 should work if nothing else.

Another user suggested deleting any .PWL files. That would work on 95, 98, and maybe ME, but I am not aware of it working on other versions of Windows.

If you don't know the password to get Win 2000 running, just format the hard drive and reinstall windows.

Simple.
