Not much info has been released yet - due out in 2009
"Release Date: TBA 2009 (estimated)
Distributor: MGM
Production Company: New Line Cinema
Cast: None announced yet.
Cast Notes: (11/22/06) Nothing has been announced yet on the casting front, but New Line Cinema will undoubtedly try to get many of the original 'Lord of the Rings' actors to reprise their roles (Orlando Bloom, Sir Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, etc.). There's a very strong chance that some of them will say "no thanks" out of loyalty to Peter Jackson.
Director: Not announced yet
Director Notes: (11/22/06) New Line Cinema had been in early negotations with Peter Jackson about possibly directing this movie, but in a recent letter to the TheOneRing.net fan site, the director revealed that the studio has informed him that his services are no longer needed, due to a failure to resolve a law suit around finances from 'The Fellowship of the Ring.' The studio is seeking a new director to work on their Tolkien adapations (this movie and The Hobbit).
Screenwriter: Not announced yet
Screenwriter Notes: (11/22/06) Whichever writer (or writers) is hired by New Line Cinema to work on this project, they are going to be faced with the Herculean (and unenviable) task of attempting to replicate the fine, poetic prose of J.R.R. Tolkien and taking his notes and adapting them into a new adventure story.
Based Upon: This would be a prequel to the events portrayed in the "Lord of the Rings", featuring new adventures of familiar characters like Gandalf, Aragorn and Legolas. (4/18/07) There are new rumors that New Line Cinema may consider buying the rights to "The Children of H rin", a new novel by Christopher Tolkien (J.R.R.'s son), set during the First Age, rather than doing a prequel starring the LOTR characters, but currently, the rights for that book are not up for sale.
Premise: (11/22/06) No details have been revealed about what the new adventures detailed in this movie might be, but it will no doubt involve many of the popular characters from 'The Hobbit' and 'Lord of the Rings', like the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, human ranger Aragorn, dwarven warrior Gimli, elven archer Legolas and the powerful wizard, Gandalf the Grey.
Filming: (11/22/06) There's no production start date for this movie, but there's a good chance New Line Cinema would seek to make it in conjunction with The Hobbit, which could start filming as early as 2007.
Genre: Action, Based on a Book,"

Hard to say - just because somebody buys the rights to a book and a producer starts looking into making the film doesnt mean it ever happens. A lot of books end up shelved indefinitely. Depends a lot on whether or not they can get the financing to make it. Right now, it looks iffy and if they havent started it halfway through 2007, a 2009 schedule is going to be hard to keep. Movies like that can take years of prep. Wait and see. Pax - C

Movie, or book?
If you're talking about a book, that's probably "The Children of Hurin," which came out recently.
If you mean a movie: Peter Jackson talked about making "The Hobbit," but as far as I KNOW, there are no plans for a release year. I might be wrong, though.
