It all depends on who you ask ... usually it is described as going from the Fall of the Roman Empire thru the end of the War of the Roses ... roughly 476 - 1485
However, having said that, a lot of people don't feel the Roman Empire "fell" in 476, it simply had already moved to Constantinople, and was flourishing there, until 1451, another date that can be seen as the end of the Middle Ages
and then ...
the Middle Ages can also be divided, between the "Dark Ages" and the "High Middle Ages" ... roughly 476 - 1000 and then 1000-1485

Roughly between 400 A.D. to 1400 A.D.
The period from end of the Roman Empire to the late 1390s to 1400 was very unstable due to the lack of Roman civilization and the presence of marauding barbarians who burned everything in sight.
The Middle Ages are also called the 'dark ages' because there is very little documention left for historians to learn what happened at that time, hence 'dark'.

The Middle Ages formed the middle period in a traditional schematic division of European history into three "ages": the classical civilization of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Modern Times. It was a period of great cultural, political, and economic change in Europe typically dated from around 500 AD to approximately 1500 AD.

I would say from the fall of the Roman Empire, like has been said before, to about 1400. Plutarch seems to me a very Rennaissance kind of guy.
Cheers!!

We can broadly categorize this as the period between the fall of two great Empires, Rome and Constantinople.
That is, from the 5th c. until 1453.
