Technically it is not Ceres because Ceres is a dwarf planet...not an asteroid. The largest asteroid now is Pallas discovered in 1802. It is 335 miles in diameter. Number 2 is Vesta discovered in 1807. 311 miles in diameter.

The largest known asteroid is Ceres which is a dwarf planet located inbetween the orbits of Mars and Jupiter in the asteroid belt.

The size is not as important as the speed at which they travel. The impact is the velocity squared times the mass . A commit may be much more dangerous as they can be traveling 150,000 mph.
