If you stay on property use the free Disney buses, they run about every 20 minutes and drop you off a few hundred feet from the park entrance. Of site hotel shuttles only make a few drop offs and pick ups a day. The often serve 5 or more hotels making the trip 30-40 minutes(compared to an average 10-15 minute drive). These shuttles drop you off in bus parking witch depending on the park is usually past the medical parking lot which makes it thousands of feet away. Also many of these shuttles are not free. In these cases if you have a car I would use it.

If you're staying on Disney property, it's best to use the free shuttles. They'll take you right to the turnstiles of each park.
If you're staying off-property, I prefer driving, because then I can control when I want to leave instead of having to settle on the pre-set shuttle schedule. Of course, the other thing to take into consideration is that if you drive yourself, and you're staying off-property, parking is now $10 per day.

If you're staying at a Disney resort here's my advice after many trips to the 'World':
If you are staying at a monorail resort then take the monorail to the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT, and drive to Animal Kingdom and MGM. If you aren't at a monorail resort then drive to all the parks.
The bus service within Walt Disney World is spotty at best. Sometimes they are efficient and on time but often you find yourself waisting so much time waiting for them.
Also, if you're at a Disney resort you don't have to pay to park at the parks, so drive and save yourself the headaches of the Disney World bus system.

It's better to drive yourself. Yes you'll have to pay for parking but those buses aren't always on time. The last time I used the buses there it took me over an hour and a half to get from the Wide World of Sports to Blizzard Beach and then when I left I the park I had to wait over an hour for the bus to get to the bus stop.

If you mean Disney World, The shuttle is much better. Less lines. Plus you don't have to fight the traffic.
I don't know anything about Disney Land.

if you stay on property and you drive yourself they give you a free parking pass so you wont have to pay to park, I ALWAYS drive my family. I dont want to wait on a bus at the end of the day nor do i want to deal with 50 other people whol are tired and cranky after a long day at the parks. If you stay off property you will have to catch the bus based on their schedule not yours. My vote is for driving yourself!
