Paedophilia? More questions than answers being thrown up ...?

First and foremost - questions that need to be answered sensibly please.

What is the present 'treatment' for an 'outed' paedophile apart from 'punishment' - is there any therepy/medication?

Is there a female contingent of paedophiles and if so - what sort of percentage of prosecutions in UK/USA

Not comparing them with homosexuals but if one recalls how 50 years ago homosexuality was an underground pursuit - how is it best to deal with this subject? If there is always going to be the hang 'em high cry - how do we get these people to identify themselves? And what in hell do we do to 'aid recovery to a more healthy pursuit" ? If they do not see as what they do as being 'worng' do they not see that society does not accept it and therefore IT IS WRONG IN THE EYES OF SOCIETY and therefore it is something that is within them that is different to everyone else? Do they see themselves as being the ones with the right and correct drives? Is this a type of insanity?

James - a simple and surely forgivable mistake on my part - I tried REALLY hard not to offend sane sound people and I certainly DID NOT compare them with homosexuals. Surely though - and I am as offended as anyone - if it is a sickness/insanity we do not execute these people. Yes - it is also my first reaction - but arn't we supposed to be better than that? How are we going to conquer this thing if all we do is 'put down' the ones we find - is finding them just going to get harder and harder? What is the professional attitude at the moment? How or what makes these people what they are? Nature or nuture?

Ha, I really liked your last edit. That certainly got your point across, well done :)

As far as pedophilia goes, I myself find that I am rather unforgiving of people who prey on children. I really don't know the statistics on female pedophiles, nor do I know the prosecution rate. I honestly don't know much about it other then the fact that it absolutely destroys lives. The children that are preyed on will have scars for the rest of their lives. I have known a few people that have very much so been damaged by the adults in their lives that were supposed to protect them. I say either chemical castration and/or lock 'em up and throw away the key. I know that sounds harsh, but like I said, it's unforgivable in my eyes. Children are innocent and we should do everything in our power as a society to make sure no person steals that innocence.

I didn't read any of your other answers yet, but I'm assuming people were kind of angry (judging by your edits). I think that may stem from the fact that people are on this forum daily saying that homosexuals go after children. It is extremely hurtful to have that said about you over and over. I realize that wasn't your intent, but to me, and probably many other people who read your answer, homosexuality and pedophilia have nothing to do with one another. The fact that you had anything about it in your question is probably what set people off. Homosexuality still is an underground pursuit due to the fact that our so called separation of church and state seems to only apply to some things. I myself will not come out to a person I haven't known for many, many years. I am way too scared of what may happen. Pedophilia is an underground pursuit for a complete different reason, that being it is a crime and perversion. You can't compare (and I realize you weren't doing so) the relationship between consenting adults and what happens when an adult preys on a child. No comparison whatsoever. Anyway, good luck.

Unfortunately people have closed minds, they think that this is a recent event, WRONG. This has been going on ever since man first walked the Earth. It goes on all over the world, We find it disgusting and em moral because we have become more civilized. People say that young children should not be subjected to sexual abuse and rightly so. But they also say the children are Innocent of any wrong doing. Now this is where things get a bit sticky, Having been on here for sometime now I often get CHILDREN come on as young as 10 years old surprisingly or not and ask about sex, masturbation, and sexual act's. Obviously I discourage them where ever I can, and I have Girls as well as boys ask question's about sex. What do I do totally ignore them or try to educate them. Example a 13 year old asked if she should got with a 17 year old. My answer to this was NO WAY far to old. It's a far wider problem than some people think.

pedophiles are all over the place, in all countries, groups and races. More of them like girls but many of them like boys as well. as I'm sure you've discovered most people hate these peopel and want them castrated, killed and have horrible things done to them.
I really just feal bad for them becuase pedophilia is just a part of some people and i don't think therepy will help. it's like an orientation like straight, gay bi. they don't just change that's why when they get out of jail they usually do stuff to kids again. Not all pedophiles act out on there sexual desires. The ones that do are called child mollesters. There was a time when these people were more excepted (like in Ancient Greece, rome) but now not so much

As for therapy. It helps them but it is not likely to cure them. Sometimes it helps them to keep controll of there fantacies and not act out on them. I think everyone should stop being so hard on pedophiles becuase they are people just like everyone else but just have very serious problems. It really is just sad how they are attracted to kids and can't help it and are constantly harrassed by everyone.

Current treatment for pedophilia involves a complex strategy of punishment, psychotherapy, and sometimes medical intervention.

There must be genuine and personally significant consequences for the behavior in order to prevent the pedophile from minimizing the behavior. (Most of them show at least a tendency to minimize the impact on the victim, so it's important that they have a self-interested motivation to change via criminal prosecution and punishment.)

Psychotherapy involves having the person with pedophilic tendencies engage in revealing a full sexual history, discussing any victimization that they may have experienced as a child, acknowledging both their fantasies and their behaviors, developing increasingly empathy toward the pain that their victim(s) endured, creating a set of sexual values that is both age appropriate and fitting within their social network, and creating a relapse prevention plan.

This is not always possible for every pedophile. Many of them can benefit from medications such as depo-provera, but this is not always completely effective. Each year there is progress being made in making treatment more effective, but we still have a long way to go before we can build a treatment protocol that can both be more successful and completely identify those clients who are at greatest risk for re-offending.

Pedophiles are present in all populations, 90% or so are Straight going after mainly little girls, 10 % are gay, going after little boys. There is no real cure, almost all pedophiles will repeat the crime if released. There are certainly pedophiles that are women, but many less than men. Sex offenders, in general, are listed on a national list, with "current" addresses published (Megan's Law)..but this fails miserably. In my opinion, no convicted pedophile is ever safe to be released, and probably should be put down...there is no sense in housing them for the rest of their lives when they cannot safely be released back into the population. Prisoners take care of this themselves when a pedophile is released to the general prison population..usually killed within two weeks..prison guards "somehow" let the pedophile's crime be known to the general population. good luck

pedophiles do not care about others and use children for self gratification. they are selfish, calculated people who know how to put on a front and manipulate people into feeling sorry for them. they need to be locked away from the public for the safety of children. they ruin peoples childhoods, lives, sexuality etc. there is no 'cure' for paedophiles and they whould probably go along with the treatment to make people believe that they have changed and think it is wrong and once they gain innocent peoples trust they will be out abusing children again. never trust a paedophile or excuse them, they feed on peoples trust and innocence; you can NEVER change one.

first of all, like I ask anyone who posts about pedophiles in the LGBT forum...why are you posting this here? are you, like so many others, comparing them to us?
the vast majority of pedophiles are heterosexual men who prey on little girls.
homosexuals are consenting adults. pedophiles prey on innocent children....they are victims of sexual predators who are unable to give consent. there is no comparison to us.
pedophiles need to be castrated (even if only chemically) and put away for life!

You are comparing it to homosexuality, as you didn't choose to post in the psychology or ethics section. Pedophiles can never be cured and should be locked up for life. Do you expect us to feel sympathy for them because we are not accepted? You should look at your thought processes again.

Depo Provera might work to suppress pedophilic urges in males. However, there is no known "cure."

Pedophiles are broken people, and will always be dangerous as long as they live. Convicted pedophiles should be executed. It's the only sure way to prevent recidivism.

Just so you know 40% of child molestations are male on male.yet gay activists continue to claim that 90% of pedophiles are straight.... the numbers just don't add up.
