I want to get a new PC that can run things like Photoshop and Virtual PC images much better than my current PC. I have about $1200 to spend. Which chipset is best suited for this. What is the minimum processor / memory / cache I should consider? Should I just buy from Dell, or configure myself?

Should the priority be on latest chipset, memory, or cache? or a blend of all three?

I have one machine here that does just that, AMD AM2 x2 5600 with 3GB on XP, I chose AM2 for the virtualization unde VPC2007, works really well on both PS and VPC2007.
NF4 Chipset I found to be reliable, but have tried VIA and that works fine too.

I also have another with XP64 with 4GB, GSX to test servers.

Advice to built one, this is what I would guess :
Case $50
Board $90
CPU $190
3GB $150 2x1GB +2x512MB for dual channel
the rets you guess for yourself.
