I was thinking of getting a motorcycle, preferrably a sport, maybe a Ninja, however I am rather large, 6'6" and about 285 pounds, so maybe a curiser is the way to go but what would be good models for a first bike

Try a smaller bike and work your way up until you become more experienced. However, if this will be your first bike buy used and pay cash, get the experience of riding before moving up to bigger and more expensive bikes. I have had friends who bought big bikes like Goldwings and rode only a few times then selling them at a loss because they weren't ready for a big bike. Nothing wrong with starting small and working up to bigger later on. In fact the smaller bike will normally sell quicker when you are ready to move up, then use the money for your next bike. Which ever bike you choose, stay away from sportbikes unless you don't mind paying 10-20 times more for insurance. Insurance companies consider these high risk and will charge you alot for coverage.

I think that a Ninja type bike for a beginner is way to much. Its way too fast and it would be better to start off with some kind of Honda, Suzuki, or Yamaha cruise bike. These are plenty fast but will get the experince u need to move up to a bigger faster bike. A 650 is a good size to start with and then u can go to a Ninja type bike after you have had some experience. Just be careful, those old ladies can see you coming.

Check out a 650 cc dual sport or adventure bike. They've got hugely tall seat heights and don't scrunch you up. Good examples include the Kawasaki KLR650, Suzuki DL650 V-Strom, and BMW F650 series. They've got enough power to move you around without being overwhelming for a newbie.

Start with something smaller and easier to handle. Also, something not so fast. With the Ninja, you could crank on the throttle a little too heavy, and find your butt sitting on the street.

I started with a 350 Honda, and I was 6'2" 225lbs.
