I'm not sure how long you can take depo for, however most hormonal methods are not recommended when you are over 35 if you smoke or if you are overweight.
Other options you have are the implant - a small rod which is inserted under the arm; it has a low does of hormone but is very effective, can be kept in for up to three years. There is also the coil - there are two types available now, the copper coil and the mirena coil. The latter has a hormone which reduces some of the known side-effects people experience with the copper coil. If you are quite disciplined you could consider natural family planning, which takes up to 6 months to master. Or there are caps and diaphragms, You should talk to your GP or local family planning. The BBC website has a good section on contracpetion and explains all the pros and cons of methods.

They just say that because of the bone density studies. I don.t know that there's any other reason. I've tried a few other methods besides depo because I really can't remember the pill and I've gotten pregnant while taking the pill. You may want to look into the patch. That's just once a week. That worked well for me. Or maybe the ring. I've never actually used the ring but my doctor swears by it. Says you can't even feel it.

I am on the Depo and have bee told that I should have a break after 2 years. I was told at the time of having my first injection that I could have either the implant, coil, the pill etc etc once on my break.

The implant is a good idea, my friend is on that and has not had any problems from it.

Hope this helps and wish you all the best

xx

There are a lot of women that have used Depo on a long term basis and are very happy with it. There are, however, a lot of women that have had serious problems, both as side effects and as "after" effects. There is an ongoing $700 million class action lawsuit against the manufacturer in Canada, and one ready to be filed in the US, pending the Canadian outcome.

The company admitted in 2004(see attached copy of letter) that it does cause a loss of bone mineral density...that is their wording for loss of bone or osteoperosis. They further began at that time to recommend that depo use be restricted to 2 years unless the benefit outweighs the risk of long term or later in life complications.

Ultimately, the decision is yours with the advice of your personal physician, but there is a lot of information out there that makes it appear to be a risky option.

I was on Depo for 7 years, and came of it because a blood test showed my oestrogen levels were very very low, I had been feeling very tired all the time. I am now on cerazette pill, and feeling much better.

Have you received a bone density check yet?

After five years you should get it checked since depo screws with bone health.

How are you doing on it? No negative side affects? LUCKY YOU :)

I was on it for four years and was so happy getting off of it.

Felt soooooo much better after stopping depo!!!
If you can't remember your pills, it's time for somebody to have the big snip! Cheaper for him but less whining if it's you.
