some bettas jump and some dont. if one learns how to jump he will never stop jumping. usually they can't jump more than 2" so its generally recommended you keep the water level a little low if you don't have a lid. if your tank is small you can make a lid out of the plastic needle craft board you can get at walmart or any craft store. its like 25 cents a sheet if that much.

It is alright if you do not have a lid, just as long as you keep the water about an inch to two inches below the surface. This insrues that the betta will not jump. However; if you keep the water close to the top - and it is a small tank - the betta will jump.

It depends on how high or low the water level on your tank is. I had a betta once and it was totally fine. Bettas don't jump so high but just make sure the water level of your tank is not too high. It's okey not to have a lid, I didn't and mine was just in a bowl.

we have one in our preschool - it doesn't have a lid and there haven't been any issues as of yet - its been there for about 6 months now
but i did find this quote interesting:
"Also, since the betta obtains oxygen from the air, the tank must not be covered with an air-tight lid and the betta must be able to easily reach the surface. (Note that some bettas enjoy leaping out of tanks, so a breathable lid is highly recommended.) If the betta has no access to air, it will suffocate. Be careful of housing it with small fish, for it will sometimes kill or eat them."

Bettas are not known to be jumpers, but it can happen. Keeping the water level about an inch below the top of the tank will help be sure he doesn't jump out.

No, they don't jump. I have had several over the past few years. I never once have seen them jump even a little bit. The males are the most beautiful! Just to let you know, don't put two of ANY gender in the same tank! They will literally fight each other to the death! I want to let you know that they are very easy to over feed. Only give them what they will consume in a few minutes. I've also learned from my experience that if you feed them the little dried blood worms, they seem healthier, and live longer. Those are the only things I have found them really to consume. You can find those where all the other fish food is.

Betta fish do jump. You could use a hair net or some other kind of netting on top of the bowl to prevent it. I have pasted some web sites for you so you can do some research on these beautiful fish.

Bettas do not jump out of a bowl. That is why they have no lid on them in the pet stores.

Bettas can jump out.
You could seriously use sarah wrap, with little air holes poked in it for a lid.
