Do I think we should toughen up on drinking and driving laws? Absolutely. Do I have strong convictions on the matter? Hell yes. Am I going to do your homework? Not likely.

I'd like to see required, automatic convictions for anyone who blows over the legal limit. Too many judges try to look at other factors when they don't need to. It's hard to ignore the numbers, but mandatory sentencing guidelines would make it impossible.

As far as sentencing goes, I'd like to see repeat offenders (literally meaning more than one -- not two or three) permanently lose their licenses. I believe people are capable of making mistakes and learning from them, and it's conceivable that someone who thinks they're safe to drive could make a poor judgment call. But like the billboards that dot I-95 in North Carolina point out, buzzed driving is drunk driving. A second offense means the offender learned nothing from previous experience and should forfeit driving privileges forever.

I had a roommate in college who used to piss me off so much bragging about his drunk driving exploits.

yes. I don't know about being persuasive but heres my reasons.

A motor vehicle is considered a deadly weapon.
When I was 15(33 now) I was visiting a friend in Vegas and we were out in town with friends. We decided to go to McDonald's for food and and as we were leaving my friend walked around to the drivers side he was struck by a loser driving drunk and was killed instantly as he was smashed between the two cars while the asshole drove away.(he was caught the next day). That was the worst experience of my life.
This kind of thing happens way to often for no good reason.
Because of this and situations like it I have always wished these lowlife losers should be convicted of 1st degree murder and sentenced to death. If you drive drunk but get stopped before you can crash or hurt or kill someone it should automatically be attempted murder.

I got a DUI for sleeping in my car one. The cop even stole some money. The rule keys in reach law. had them hidden under the seat while sleeping off a party. To this day I should have drove the two miles home.
I found out the cop got a night out with his wife to eat on MADD. Not to metion after if was dropped it was still on my record.
My point- no matter what you do- the figures for death per cap are going to be about the same. No matter what the rules, the same 3% are going to drive anyway.
My ex just got her liscense back after lossing it for DUI's for like the tenth time. Fortunatly she just changes her name and state. Since she cute she gets away with it. Is this enough for you.
What chaps my butt is the road blocks, and then hitting you for unsafe equipment or something. What smucks
No I never drink and drive, ever! Wouldn't give them crooks the advantage.

Yes, and why don't we 'stiffen' the penalties for people who are distracted while they drive and talk on their cell phones? Frankly, I'd rather be on the road with a drunk driver than with some maniac yelling and going berserk while talking on his cell phone and driving at the same time. I'm waiting for the day one of these freaks hits me; he had better hang up and call his lawyer, 'cause I intend to sue his sorry a*s!! -RKO- 05/12/07

That is a big yes. I was hit by a drunk driver. Me and mom were taken to the hosp and when we were brought back to the police station the low life was found drinking while waiting to be questioned. By the way, the judge let him go when he said he was getting help. Two jerks!

WE DO NOT NEED TO STIFFEN THEM WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS ENFORCE EXISTING LAWS. IF I HAD A SAY, I'D
PERMANENTLY REVOKE LICENSES AFTER THE 2ND
DUI AND IF THEY ARE CAUGHT DRIVING WITHOUT A LICENSE, I YEAR IN JAIL......
