The side mirrors are slightly convex. This expands the field of view, but makes objects appear slightly smaller.
You know how some women use magnifying mirrors to put on make up? Those are concave, so they produce the opposite effect, narrowing the field of view.

Some cars have convex mirrors which increases the field of view but diminishes the image, making objects seem smaller.
