I would go to the control panel>add/remove programs and remove all the programs you don't want.
Then I would look in folders and delete all the files I don't want.
Then I would go to all programs>accessories>system tools and do disk clean up and defragment hard drive after that.

What exactly do you want to get rid of? Programs? Viruses? Spyware? Best suggestion, buy windows XP form officemax or somewhere and do a complete reinstall but you would also have to get the other programs on the computer that you would use.
If not than you can uninstall unwanted programs in the control panel. Go to start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs. Then select programs one at a time from the list. Careful what you remove!!!
Then get you a good AV and spyware/adware scanner and run the scans. That should help
Or you could try the recovery partition but you would still have to do the 2 steps above. The recovery partition is for when something is wrong with the computer like missing a critical dll file or something because it will restore you to the last known good configuration.
I think you should just start with the 2 steps above. Make sure the Anti Virus and spyware/adware removers has all the current updates when running scans. They may take a couple of hours to run Run one at a time since they use a lot of memory and will slow down your computer. When that is done, go to my computer>right click C drive>go to properties>click on the tools tab>defragment now>run the analyze and it will tell you if you need a defrag or not.
hope that helps

Alright, first did the computer start out with Windows XP as it's default operating system? If so, restart your computer. As it is loading rapidly press the f8 button. Faster, Faster... If it worked, your computer will make a beeping noise and will enter into a new screen. This is a self-help screen where you can go to solve trouble shooting problems. Look around for a tab titled "Restoring default." This program allows you to completely erase all files and programs that weren't on the original hard drive. It restores the computer to the way it was when it was fresh out of the box. If the computer had a different operating system to begin with, then you will just need to reinstall that software after you complete the steps mentioned above. Your grandson either downloaded this software directly from the Internet, or he installed via a CD-ROM. Ask your grandson how he got XP on his computer, and just reinstall it. Hope this helps...
Regards, Siekuto.

Go to the control panel and click on the "add/or remove" and let the programs come up, If there's anything in there you know for sure you don't want then you can remove them. DON'T try to delete directly from you harddrive, some of the programs are associated and you could ruin your Windows XP. You can delete stuff from my documents, music and pictures. Then go to start, accessories, system tools and run the Disk clean up and Disk Defragmenter. This should help a lot.

Ideally if you have the origianl winxp disk then do a complete format and fresh install. If not then follow the steps below.
download free ccleaner http://homepage.ntlworld.com/websitehomepage/FreePCHelpStuff.htm
use it to remove all programs by running it and going to tools and uninstall the programs you dont want, then click on startup and remove everything from there too. Then hit issues and click scan for issues and fix selected issues remove everything it finds here too. Then run the cleaner itself and remove all temporary files left behind. The program is very safe to use and has never deleted a wrong file for me. Then manually remove anything you dont want from the "my documents" folder and the comp should be quite clean now.
