Hi. Automotive lifts use a simple ratchet to prevent injury if the seal fails. You can hear the 'click, click, click' as the car is lifted.

Isn't this usually a manually operated valve? Then the ram can be locked because no hydraulic fluid can get in or out.

Hydraulic rams on lifting mechanisms should be fitted with check valves which stop oil loss from ram in event of pressure
failure.
