Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's single season home run record of 60 which he hit in 1927. Maris broke the record in 1961 by hitting 61 home runs.

To the true baseball fan Maris still holds the record. Those who came after him, like Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds, who hit more, did it illegally. They used steroids which is cheating.

Maris was an excellent ball player. He has never gotten the credit he deserved. He had one of the greatest arms in the game.

Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961, which still stands as the American League record. Since the AL added two expansion teams that year, the season schedule was expanded from 154 to 162 games, giving Maris additional opportunities to go long, which he exploited.

Maris had three very good seasons and took home two AL Most Valuable Player Awards for his efforts. That and some All-Star selections are the right amount of honoraria for his career. He is not Hall measure, which the writers have understood.
