It's possible that you got a batch of diseased females there. They could all have had a swim bladder infection that took some time to become a serious issue. If you see any other fish begin to develop the same bloating you will need to treat the tank.

You may also have a case of dropsy in the tank. If the fish got so bloated that their scales were standing out this could be the problem. Again, if any others develop the same symptoms you will need to treat them.

For both problems the treatment is the same, quality antibiotics. My choice for internal infections is Furanace. It's not commonly carried in many pet stores but is readily available on the web. I would suggest you go ahead and get it and have it ready in case the problem returns. In either case treat as per the package directions for 2 weeks.

there is an illness that is called bloat are you sure they weren't pregnant cos they look bloated and have a dark patch underneath at back end of belly.if you don't separate the fish into breeding nets then they hold on to their babies cos other fish eat them and then they die for their trouble.always split other fish from others either in nets or floating nurseries that you can get from pet store
IN Bloat: Scales appear to stand on end, and fish looks bloated. This may be signs of an intestinal infection. Fish cannot swim below the surface without exertion, and many stay in upright position.

Try reducing feeding. If that doesn't work, then do a partial water change and still reduce feeding.
