THE parents of missing Madeleine McCann today begged their daughter's kidnapper to "please give our little girl back".

In a dramatic plea, mum Kate McCann asked the person who has three-year-old Madeleine to "not hurt her or scare her".

In a statement Kate, sitting alongside her husband Gerry, said: "We beg, let Madeleine come home. We need our Madeleine."

The emotional mother added: “Madeleine is a beautiful, bright, sunny and caring little girl.

“She is so special. Please, please, do not hurt her.

“Please let us know where to find Madeleine or put her in place of safety and tell somebody where.

“We beg you to let Madeleine come home."

Kate also added her plea in Portuguese.

The McCann family also disclosed that on the night of her disappearance Madeleine was wearing white pyjama bottoms with a small floral design and a short-sleeved pink top with a picture of Eeyore with the word Eeyore written in capital letters.

The clothes were bought at Marks and Spencer last year.

The parents' appeal came after they yesterday asked well-wishers to pray for the toddler's safe return.

Speaking for the first time since the blonde tot was snatched from their Portugal holiday apartment, mum Kate said: “Please continue to pray for Madeleine. She’s lovely.”

Clutching her daughter’s favourite pink toy kitten for comfort, Kate, 38, and husband Gerry attended a Portuguese Mother’s Day mass — still clinging to hope that little Maddie will be found alive.

In the emotional church service, GP Kate was quietly presented with a bunch of five roses by altar girl Emily Seromenho, 14, whose mother is English.

She then lined up with local mums and walked to the altar, where she followed tradition by laying the flowers at the foot of a statue of the Virgin Mary. Kate paused momentarily before rejoining Gerry, 38, to pray silently for Maddie’s re-appearance.

The couple had travelled to the whitewashed Igreja da Senhora da Luz church by minibus with a group of relatives.

The 800-yard trip marked the first time they had left their Ocean Club holiday complex in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz since angel-faced Maddie was abducted as she slept last Thursday.

Kate and consultant cardiologist Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, had left her with her brother and sister — two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie — as they ate at a nearby diner.

They took it in turns to check on the children, but horrified Kate discovered Maddie had vanished when she returned at 10pm. Portuguese police were yesterday continuing a massive hunt for the youngster, but there was still no sign of an end to the nightmare.

Kate and Gerry had been due to fly home on Saturday after their holiday. Instead they remained in Portugal yesterday and insisted on attending the Catholic Mass.

As they waited for the service to begin, Kate spent seven or eight minutes kneeling in quiet prayer on the front row of the church.

She clutched and repeatedly kissed Maddie’s cuddly toy kitten, from which she has refused to be parted since their ordeal began.

Standing on the steps of the tiny church, Kate said in a faltering voice: “Gerry and I would like to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to everybody — particularly the local community here that has offered so much support. We couldn’t have asked for more.”

She and Gerry draped their arms around each other for support. As Kate’s words trailed off into tears, her husband said: “From today’s service the thing we are going to take is strength and courage and hope. We continue to hope for the best possible outcome from this for us and for Madeleine.”

At least 150 worshippers packed the 16th-century church for the Sunday mass, which fell on the Portuguese Mother’s Day.

Priest Father Jose Manuel Pacheco had asked Kate if she could handle such a difficult service. He said she bravely said: “No problem.”

Flowers ... altar girl Emily

During the ceremony, he told the family: “We are with you, the Parish is with you. We pray that Madeleine will be brought home safe to the heart of the family.

“We pray for Madeleine that God can give her life.” Turning to Kate and Gerry, he added: “We are with you. Courage, courage, courage”.

At the end of the one-and-three-quarter-hour service, other mothers — mostly Portuguese — approached Kate and Gerry, hugging and kissing them both. Many of them left the church in tears.

Altar girl Emily said: “The priest asked me to give the lady the flowers. I felt she was very sad. I felt very sad. When I gave the flowers to her, she was crying.

“I just said when I gave her the flowers that she should give them to Mary and she said thank you.

“On Mother’s Day, we bring flowers and give them to our mum to say thank you. It’s very special. It was nice, but sad too because of what’s happening to Madeleine.

“I have always felt safe here. Nothing has happened before.”

The priest was later holding a private prayer service at the family’s holiday apartment.

A source at the complex said twins Amelie and Sean — left sleeping as the intruder grabbed Maddie — were helping the couple cope.

The source said: “Their other children are really what’s keeping them going — together with their faith.

“They are giving them strength. Going to mass was a comfort, but they can’t relax. Their heads are full of worry for Madeleine.”

Holiday firm Mark Warner has flown in two specialist counsellors. Three Leicestershire Police liaison officers have also been drafted in.
