Pet shop available rat food is the best thing to feed your rat on. Something like rat muesli or rat nuggets from Petsmart contain all the nutrients your rat will need, as well as help to keep his/her teeth worn down. Stick with petsmart because random pet shops tend to have bags labeled 'rat food' that you can't be sure what they are. Nuggets are better because they avoid the rat picking out the bits of food they like and missing out on nutrients. I like to feed a mixture of mix and pellets, to stop them getting bored while still getting all their nutrients.
Stay away from soft fruits, particularly strawberries and grapes with rats. Chocolate is also very bad! You'll find rats will eat absolutely anything, doesn't mean it's good for them. Best to stick to rat food only, and buy rodents treats for them instead of giving them human food.
Rats live around 2-3 years, no longer than hamster really.

Fruits, vegetables, and treats made for rats are good. They also like uncooked pasta (but only give them one piece, as it will expand once they eat it), cereal (low sugar kinds, like Kix), and nuts (unsalted, in the shells- try almonds). Don't give your rat too many nuts though. It's not healthy for rats to eat too many human foods. Most of his food intake should be rat food. Definitely stay away from chocolate. I've also heard that green beans are bad (dangerous) for rats. Make sure any fruits or vegetables you give your rat are washed really well so that all pesticides are washed off.

Rats are omnivores---like us. Feed it a mainly vegetarian diet, plus seeds, nuts, and rabbit pellets. If you feed it meat too often, its feces might smell too much.
Rats in the wild live about 1-2 years. Pet rats can live about 6 years.
