Ballarat is quite large for a regional city, it is surrounded mostly by dry farmland and some bush or forests. It is a couple hours from the coast so as already pointed out it can be colder in Winter and hotter in Summer but certainly no where near as cold as northern hemisphere cities. There is a lot to do with kids, it has one of the best tourist attractions in the state in Sovereign Hill and the smaller Cryal Castle. It has a lot of parks and playgrounds with a large one near the (currently empty) lake. It has public swimming pools. Plenty of local sports: soccer, cricket and football have popular leagues.

It has a good shopping strip (compared to most country towns) and a lot of choices for schools.

Ballarat is within striking distance of Melbourne. There are new fast train services and a 110km freeway for much of the way so day trips are easy. Daily commuting for work may be too far.

My sister lives outside Ballarat and loves it. Lots of farms and a bit hilly but it really is a bit like a city with Myer and all those shops. Its a bit dry at the moment and can get quite cold in winter but its a good place for kids.

I dont know what it is like to live in but I went there for a visit and I found a great city not as big Melbourne of course but the people were great and I had the best damn counter meal at a little historic pub ever. All in all it just had a great community feel about it.
