It was in the movie The Skeleton Key. But you put a line of red brick dust next to your door step. A bad person is unable to walk over it and enter your house or whatever. Voodoo

Don't know if this is Hollywood stuff or not, but just watched a movie where red brick dust was placed across doorways and gate openings to keep out bad spirits and those persons that are not welcome into the house. It was a movie that took place in Louisiana and had a lot to do with Voodoo.
