It's great, as long as you manage your sales effectively. First, try to avoid hourly rate projects ... charge by the project. Second, network as much as possible ... will save tons of marketing time and cost. Third, prepare to "work" more hours for yourself than you do for others.

It's pretty good when you have business. And when you do have business, it's great when your clients pay you on time. Otherwise you might be on a 60-90 day pay cycle that will really hurt if you have contractors you are employing to assist you on the project.

I'm a marketing consultant and my brother is a health care management consultant and it's great to expense stuff so that you don't get hit as hard by taxes. But it can be unstable at times so you have to look ahead 6 months to a year ahead to ensure that you have business year round.
