Honestly, I wouldn't give your son this name. Eugene may sound nice but I think that he will get picked on in school..Eugene is usually a name associated with bookworms or anti-social teenagers. I mean, try saying the name a lot, imagining it on test papers, and on programs for school plays, etc. You could go with a unique name such as Jackson, Austin, Nathan, Travis, Ethan, etc, but I think Eugene would get him picked on and I don't think that your son would later like it.
Instead, maybe you can use Eugene as his middle name. It will make you happy and it will make him happy with a more accepting first name.

My dad name is Eugene Allen. He is 79 and hates the name Eugene. He will sign his checks and legal documents E.Allen. My daughter jokes around with him ( she's 25) and calls him Grandpa Eugene. He also doesn't like grandpa. He has people calling him E.
Hopes this helps.

Eugene is nice, has Greek origins and means "well born." But since it's not very common anymore, and gets used in movies for geeks, it might not pass the "playground test" regarding teasing. If you really like it and/or it's a family name (like in my family), then you could either call him Gene or perhaps use it as a middle name. Good luck!

If you like the name then use it. Does not matter what anyone else thinks. Might suggest tho using Gene for short. Most school enrollment forms have a space for "name child uses at home" and teachers will normally call attendance with those names. All a matter of personal preference.

i think this is a very risky name. if you really like it, but are worried about your son being picked on, i would choose it as his middle name. Then he can choose to go by it if he wants to , but he can also avoid it if it might make him be made fun of.
Alternatively, you could name him Eugene, but give him a really good middle name he could fall back on.

Stereotypically ..."Eugene" is the nerdy kid everyone makes fun of. Life is hard enough in school for kids being socially accepted without helping the bullies by giving your child a name like that.I mean, look at Eugene Levy. Enuff said???

I like it, but it does sound like an old man's name. However, some of the old names have come back in style. when I was a kid, Grace and Emma were old lady names, now they are popular again. Maybe you will start a new trend. Especially if he is cool and popular...I'm sure he will be. And probably most people will call him by the nickname Gene.

I personally don't think it would be well recieved. I probably wouldn't use it as a first name because, in my experience, that's the name the teacher calls out for roll. If you really like the name, I'd use it for a middle name.
