You may be the executor of the will or a person entitled to be Administrator C.T.A. of a will. The grant of letters of administration gives you the legal authority to act as the personal representative of your uncle's estate.

It will enable you to collect his assets, sell assets, pay debts, and make ultimate distribution to the beneficiaries of the estate under the terms of his will.

I do not know what state the decedent lived in, but I can assure you that the procedure is the same or similar to that in all 50 states of the United States.

Your uncle may have named you in his will to be his executor, but the court has to review the will, make sure it was written correctly and signed properly.

The court will then ratify his naming you to handle things and issue a document giving you authority to act on behalf of the estate. The document giving you that authority is a letter of administration.
