It is really easy.. just login to the router page.
Open your web browser.
In the address bar type 192.168.1.1 and enter your user name and password (hope you set one)
Then on the setup screen for your router click the wireless tab.
Turn on WPA or whatever method you want to use.
Set a password or pass phrase.
Save the settings.
Go to your sons laptop and connect to the wireless SSID.. you will be prompted for the "encryption code" enter the same password or pass phrase..
Your finished.

On Linksys:
Login into the web interface and go to the wireless administration:
In that select WPA-PSK for encryption.
then select AES or TKIP.
Select a passphrase and save the settings.
Now on your laptop configure your wireless card with the same
passphrase and use AES and TKIP which ever you selected on the Linksys router.
This should do the job.

The router should already be encrypted because the packets are being sent wireless, the info can be picked up by things called sniffers that hackers use. So any pretty named brand or new router will be already.

i believe the encryption cums in,wen setting up the network. By using wep/wpa you secure your network with a passkey of your choice. or have them do it automatically,so wen he trys to connect he'll either have to put in the passkey u give to him..
