Spokane is a great "Small Town"

If you want someplace near Seattle, Bellevue is very nice. Upscale, low crime, good schools, 10m from Seattle. For something unique, Mercer Island is between Seattle and Bellevue, only 5m to either. Beautiful island, very quiet, awesome views. If you want less populated areas but still want scenery and some great outdoors nearby, try Bainbridge Island, hour car/passenger ferry ride to downtown Seattle, easy and unique commute.

I you want something besides Seattle area or any metro area, a great little town is Walla Walla (yes, Walla Walla, WA!). That little town has three colleges, liberal arts even! It is a booming wine region with rolling blue-hills. Some fantastic restaurants (yea...go figure!) too. A nice small affordable town, hot in summer and cold in winter, very friendly people. Good town for both young and old.

My personal opinion, avoid Tacoma, Spokane, and Yakima. All great cities to many people, but I wouldn't recomend them as a primary residence.

Spokane, Cheney, and Liberty Lake are all relatively nice places to live in Eastern Washington. If you want to live on the coast of Washington, try Longview or Vancouver. Olympia is another nice place, and none of those places are as expensive as Bellevue, Redmond, or Seattle.

Bellingham is also a fairly nice place, with a lower cost of living, and a slower pace of life.

One of the best places to live in the Northwest is Bellevue. Bellevue has one of the best school districts in America, one of the best communities for youth and has a very low crime rate (decreasing each year) with a growing population.

Bellevue is mainly white population followed by the Asian and then a small percentage Hispanics, very low. Bellevue is growing with it's great downtown, including Lincoln Square and great downtown towers.

Great place, but if you are looking for a cheap place, DON'T come to Bellevue. Houses average at around its $500,000 with two bedrooms. Taxes are high and property prices are on the sky. Good luck in choosing :)

I lived in Tacoma for 15 years, and i highly recommend living there as long as you dont have kids, the neighborhoods are not that nice and too much violence at these schools. i live in Enumclaw Wa it is nice if you have kids but there is nothing really to do unless you are the outdoorsy type. I think Puyallup would be a nice place to live and there schools are decent. it is close to everything to tacoma and Seattle

Tacoma:
It's smaller. It's safer (though you might want to invest in a good car alarm). It has nice neighborhoods. The schools aren't bad. It's cheaper than Seattle. It's close to EVERYTHING. AND it still has the mild summers and winters that Washington is known for.
If you're looking for something even smaller, try one of the suburbs, like Parkland, Lakewood, University Place, Roy, or Graham.

BS on Tacoma being safer. Head to the eastside. Kirkland, Bellevue (pretty hoppin) For a little more layed back, try Bothell, Issaquah, Redmond, Renton. Need to be away from it all, hit N. Bend, Enumclaw, Monroe. All still accesible to the city, but each have their own unique charm.

If you are white, Spokane or Walla Walla or Bellingham.

Hispanic, then Yakima.
