I want to have an Active Direrectory and a domain that my computers will hook up to but I can't seem to figure out how to get started. I have assigned IP's and the internet isn't on this network. I have file sharing and big hard drives and a computer with 2 GB RAM. I want it to be simple, i think.

to make it simple, don't use active directory. just use regular networking.

1. Make sure all your system is connected to hub/switch.
2. Make sure all your system is in the same workgroup (Mycomputer (rightclick) > Properties > Computer Name > Workgroups)
3. Deactivate Simple File Sharing
- open Registry (start > run >regedit)
- point to HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\LSA
- look for "ForceGuest" change the variable from 1 (one) to 0 (zero)
- Logoff/restart windows.

Now, on computer #1, install second LAN Card. After 2nd lancard installed:
1. Set IP's and DNSes on Computer #2-3-4
2. On computer #1, set 1st LAN to connect to the internet. and set 2nd card to connect to your hub/switch.
3. Open Network Properties, and "Bridge" both connection.

For sharing your files, just use your Folder Properties, notice that you have new tab called Security, there, you can give access, remove access, deny access, even assign password for a folder, something like Win98 Folder Properties.

You can't have it all. For a start to run active directory you need to have server software, the machine needs to be set up as a primary domain controller and then you need to join all the machines to the domain for full use of the facilities.

If you can get your hands on windows Server 2000\2003,u're pretty much set, since it has a startup menu that shows you the different tasks or server to setup. If not there are some cool and useful windows software, like simple DNS(to setup dns server)
Winroute(Nat & Firewall).etc,do a google search for more

Win Xp computers cannot be active directory domain controllers....you have to install win2000/2003 sever on one the system...one you finish the basic installation you can convert it to domain controller using 'dcpromo' command..i am recommending you, better refer win2000/2003 server books before the attempt...goodluck..
