I know the reason for the "soap" part, but not the "opera" part

because they used to be on the radio, and they were always sponsored by soap brands and had commercials for different soaps. Thats how they got their name soap operas.

they started out with no one sponsoring them except soap and company's and guess they they it'd be drama everyday like the real one's

Just be grateful they don't sing! They are bad enough as they are, imagine Eastenders or Corrie sung in operatic style!!!!!!!!!!!
