It's a statisic used to measure the ability of the pitcher to prevent baserunners

(Walks+Hits)/Innings Pitched (WHIP)

Theorectically - the lower the WHIP the more effective the pitcher is at preventing baserunners.

WHIP is a category that means Walks + Hits divided by Innings Pitched. For example: Pitcher walks 1 guy, and 2 others get hits all in one inning. The pitcher only pitches one inning, the WHIP is 3 divided by 1, or 3 WHIP. Over 9 innings, with no other walks or hits, the WHIP would be 3/9 or .333 WHIP

The WHIP stands for walks and hits per innings pitched. It is used to determine the effectiveness the pitcher has against each individual hitter. After each hitter faced the pitcher's WHIP will either go up or down. It gives a general measure of a pitcher's ability to keep batters off base.

It's pretty easy to calculate a pitcher's WHIP. For example, Randy Johnson gives up 6 hits and walks 2 batters in 7 innings pitched, his WHIP would be: [2 (walks allowed) + 6 (hits allowed)]/7 (innings pitched) = 1.14.

WHIP = (Walks + Hits) / Innings Pitched (IP)
