We staged a Harry Potter for my son a few years ago. Some of the things we did:
* There was a sale on satin fabric. For less than 30 dollars we were able to hang all of the walls in shiny Gryffindor colors. If you don't want to do the walls floor to ceiling, though, you can make a couple of large banners very easily and inexpensively.
* My wife found some napkins that had the gryffindor, slytherin, hufflepuff, and ravenclaw crests (you can find these images on Wikipedia and print them out - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogwarts_houses).
She got some iron-on laminating plastic to give the crest strength, then made a cape (just a rectangle of black fabric with a clasp) for each of the guests with a house patch on it.
* We strung Christmas lights that looked like candles along the ceiling in the dining area. It didn't look the slightest bit like the candles in the grand dining hall in the movie, but that's where the kids' imaginations kicked in and filled in the details. They "got it."
* You may not be able to get your hands on Bertie Bott's beans, but you can certainly get Jelly Bellys as a substitute. Check the web to see if you can find an online source for Bertie Bott's.
* We used rod shaped pretzels to make edible magic wands. Melt some chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave (be very careful if you melt in the microwave - it can burn rather suddenly - heat it in 30 second increments). Dip the pretzel in the chocolate, then roll it in colored sugar or anything else that looks magical.
* We played a levitation relay using feathers attached to helium balloons.
* The soundtrack was playing on the stereo throughout the party.
* We didn't do this, but it occurs to me that it wouldn't be that hard to get some 3 foot tree branches and some straw that they could use to make their own broomsticks.
That might get you started. Have fun!

Start out by having them "shop" at Diagon's Alley. Give them gold coins from the wizard bank, light-up wands from Olivander's, and wizard robes. Then have a feast with the same kinds of food eaten in the book. Give normal foods magical names, like instead of Jelly Beans, Berty Bot's Every Flavored Beans. Watch the first Harry Potter movie while giving the option for two people at a time to play a giant chess game with tiles as the board and cardboard playing pieces. If they don't know how to play chess, play Simon Says on it until they've moved across the board. Have adults and teenagers dress up as Hermione, Professor Mcgonagal (witch hat and stuffed cat is all you need) Dumbledore (using a santa costume will work) Harry, Ron, and other characters, Use language like "muggles" and use spells said in the book "Petrificus Totalus!". If you have a pool, do and underwater race to get as many rubber animals as possible, similar to the second challenge in the fourth book.
My brother had a Harry Potter birthday when I was 5 and I enjoyed it a lot. But since I was young, that's all I remember doing at the party. Sorry, and good luck to yours.

Everyone should dress up as the haz (harry) himself. Buy some thick rimmed glasses and obviouly a wand. Draw scars on your foreheads and have a cool time. I wish i could go as i am the biggest hazza potts fan ever!!! Ive read all the books about 10 times each and i own every game and seen every movie. I also have a whole load of merchandise. Youshold decorate your house like hogwarts, you dont need to spend a lot but i would if it was for a hazza potts party. buy plastic spiders and hogwarts banners and wizard styles thing like that. It wuld be sooo COOL!

1.make wands out of chart paper and give to the kids.
tip:-u can add a description for every wand as in the movie.
ex:-phoenix feather, unicorn hair...........etc.,
To make the wand,
1.Cut the chart paper into 4 equal parts.
2.take the length of the wand as the length of the chart quarter and width that of may be 2 or 2.5 inches.
3.Roll the chart cut, tightly and paint it black or brown or woody or silver.
tip 2:-make a wand that matches the description of Harry's wand and give them to the best spell putter around.you will have the party people all enjoying putting spells. It will definitely be worth the trouble.(I did indeed try it out)
2.For any games, divide the party people in the name of the 4 HP houses.
For one game, give the golden snitch as the prize.
(Take a golf or TT ball and paint it golden for the snitch)
Were my tips in anyway helpful?

-Do that game where you have a character's name on your forehead (which you don't know what it is) and people give you hints or you ask questions which people answer so you can figure out who your character is.
-Have butterbeer, chocolate frogs, bertie botts beans, and other foods that relate to Harry Potter (which you can get pretty much anywhere)
-Have everyone dress up as characters
-Discuss what you believe will happen in book 7, is Snape good/bad?
-Pin the Scar on Harry
-Buy a bunch of Harry Potter glasses and have everyone wear them

The food of course... treacle tarts, pumpkin juice and pasties (or your versions of all of those things mentioned in the movie). A fog machine for the front entrance so they have to cross just like first years at Hogwarts, I have to go or I'd think of more... maybe I'll come back and edit my answer later! :-) Have fun!
