I have been dancing Argentine tango for about 2 years. The ballroom people I've talked to seem to agree that AT is much more difficult than the ballroom dances including the ballroom forms of tango - international tango and american tango. They like the fact that AT is improvised and is led, rather than having set patterns. If you want to learn tango, I suggest trying Argentine tango. It is challenging, but very rewarding.

At a beginner level, you would basically be doing "Bronze" level steps and figures in all of the ballroom dances. Most people seem to think that East Coast Swing, Foxtrot, and Rumba are the easiest steps.

American Ballroom Tango was the most difficult for me and my wife to learn.

It is generally easier to learn ballroom if you have prior dance experience in ballet or jazz. Matters such as posture and balance are important.

American Ballroom Tango is not the same as Argentine Tango. We have been taking lessons in Argentine Tango and we are still finding new things to learn after 8 years of lessons.

Try every one of them first.
The easiest is the one you like best.
The hardest is the one that don't appeal to you.
