I was told that Omonia Square in Athens Greece is dangerous. Is this true? (Three well-traveled men in late 30's thinking about staying there.)

Omonia Square is probably not one of Athens' most attractive features. It's usually very crowded, but could be a good place to start your day as it's located in the center of Athens and therefore provides many public transport options to tourists. As for being dangerous, during the day there is no big danger - exept for pick pockets who take advantage of the crowded roads. At night, you would need to be a bit more carefull, as there is less trafic. I believe Omonia owes its bad reputation to homeless people hanging out at the train station there. But even that is a phenomenon that has decreased a lot the past few years. In any case, I suppose the worst scenario would be a pick pocket or a cell phone theft, which could be avoided with a little precaution. I don't think it will be dangerous for 3 men travelling together, especially if all that you're interested in is getting back to your hotel which will probably be located in one of Omonia's central areas. The central square itself cannot be dangerous and I suppose there won't be a problem as long as you don't go exploring Omonia's little alleys at night.

Go and don't worry about it. You're in a group of three. Be wise and don't hang out solo at night. Don't get wasted and walk back to your hotel alone. Just use common sense. Our family spent several weeks in Greece. We took several land tours and a cruise. If I went back. I rent a small house (very basic) on the Ilsand of Rhodes and get to know the people and their customs more. The people are a happy go lucky bunch.

It is not dangerous, especially for three men in their 30's. It is just not very pleasant, because it is the place where most immigrants hang around (I am not saying this in a racist way, I just mean the shops and the market and restaurants there are not classy etc), prostitutes, etc. The square itself is quite nice, the areas around it are not so nice, but I wouldn't call them dangerous in any way (just don't eat there).
If the hotel you've chosen is good and clean, it's fine.

Actually the place of the quare itself is not that dangerous, since it is crowded all day and night long.. The streets arround this suare can be dangerous for somebody who goes there alone. There is not actually life danger, but always the possibility of becoming a victim of pick pockets

Lots of tourist there and tourists are the ones that make that dangerous, not the locals.
