Do tires only have to be boxed to ship them? Can I just put a UPS label on them?

When I purchased tire in the past, they came wrapped in plastic with the UPS label on that.

I understand you need to apply pressure sensitive tape through the center of the tire and then competely around the body of the tire so the tape is attached to itself. Then attach the shipping labels to that tape that covers the tread of the tire. Then put clear tape over the labels.
