Apocalypse Now should be your opener for this double-bill. It will give you an overview of the conflict, and the scope of the war and its impact. It's a classic theme, heavily borrowing from Conrad's novel, "The Heart of Darkness", about a journey that goes deeper and deeper into the madness and darkness of the human heart. Platoon, on the other hand, throws you into the madness without much preparation. Both are good films.
Another, and actually clearer, film about a platoon in combat in 'Nam is "Hamburger Hill". A number of the vets I know say that it's right there.

I saw Apocalypse Now first. When I saw Platoon, I had a greater understanding of the politics imposed on the commanding offices and officers. War is ugly, period. And totally unnecessary. It's a boy thing though, and until these boys understand there is no future in cultural annihilation, war will continue to exist. It's a way to jingle their testis.

Apocalypse Now..... its more in depth and gives a better idea of what was REALLY going on back then...
Both movies are good.... but AN is more a " documentary story" being told.. Platoon is more a "commerical"..

Watch Apocalypse Now first only because it has a slower pace,so when you are back from a little intermission, you can be wowed by Platoon. Both are superb! Then go out and get a little known classic called:The Boys in Company C starring Andrew Stevens.Note:The co-star[Craig Wasson]does the guitar score as well as a little strumming in the flick. The song:Uncle Sam-I'm in Vietnam[actually called:Here I am] actually got me teary-eyed when I heard it.Beautiful song and great finger-picking.

if you want to watch a war movie watch platoon.
apocalypse now isn't really a war movie. yeah it takes place during a war, but the war is the backdrop, the story is much older than vietnam, and originally too place n africa. vietnam was just a betterbackdrop at the time, it was in peoples minds more, helped the viewers identify with.

I'd watch Platoon first, because it's such a worse movie than Apocalypse Now, that you'll only be disappointed if you watch it 2nd..
