would you agree to pay taxes to fund this unfunded mandate?
I was thinking that if schools could actually fund the No Child Left Behind project, less taxes might be spent in all other areas of social welfare eventually because all people would be required to get a good education to begin with. What do you think.

Also, for those of you who think you have never used social welfare, if you received an education in public schools you certainly have.

Yes I do agree that education is of the utmost importance but just like the Social Security Administration...How much of our tax dollars would go in that direction and how much would be diverted into aggressive covert/overt undermining of governments, wars, meddling, not to mention politician's pockets, etc.etc. If I was honestly assured the taxes would be used for a positive agenda like education, I would gladly pay them.

Wow. I just wanted to comment on the last statement you made. Public school education=social welfare? How so when attendance is compulsory? I and more people than I can remember have been told that we would be locked up for non attendance, that they did not care if we learned a single thing, but our butts better be parked at a desk so they won't lose tax money. I guess that may be an answer to the first part of your question as well. Also, there is a significant part of our population being left behind in education. That would be the children of citizens. More and more, public education is being centered around the needs of illegal 'immigrants' and their children. Maybe there will be enough money to educate our own if we pay more.

1993 federal education budget - 32.4 billion
1994 federal education budget - 27 billion
2001 federal education budget - 42 billion
2007 federal education budget - 67 billion

1993 pell grant budget - 6.4 billion
2001 pell grant budget - 8.7 billion
2007 pell grant funding - 13.6 billion

Think of all the money that could be saved if forced busing was abandoned. That money could be then applied into better schooling for EVERYONE!
