I don't think the two are related. Just coincidence.

Have you ever done a tuneup?

Sounds like its possible that there is a poor connection on the engine management input sensors. If there is a failure on any one of these sensors the engine operates in a "Get Home" mode. Its possible that during the fitting of the alternator the connectors on one of the sensors was moved accidentally.
There are two ways to get to the bottom of this, 1 check every connection in the engine bay starting at the ones closest to the alternator, 2 get a dealership to hook the van up to there diagnostic computer to check the engine management system.
Good luck.

Hi

You need to have the fault codes read out and this will point you in the right direction. The codes can sometimes be quite cryptic and so if you like you can mail them to me and I'll decypher them for you.

Even if the light is not on the codes will still be there, and the good news is you don't have to take it to a garage to have the codes read out, anyone with a basic FCR (fault Code Reader) can access them for you.

My guess would be a faulty air flow sensor or a low output/inactivity at the O2 sensor, but like I say, have the codes read out.

Cheers

id say its nothing to do with the alternator and if its a diesel then possibly the air flow meter has had it.
get the codes read from the car, to find out why the light is on.

take it to a dealer and have them run a diagnostic test. It sounds like to me a senor on the engine is bad and needs to be replaced.

hope this helps
