swimming pool sand is the only thing to use. trust me I tried other sand and it took for ever to get all the dirt out of my pool.

Swimming pool filter sand (usually #20) is the only thing you should use. (Some older filters used to use gravel as well, but you probably won't find many of those in home use now..) It is designed specifcally for that purpose. Any other types of sand will very likely result in various kinds of trouble ranging from not filtering the water to clogging the filter to sand returning to the pool, due to the incorrect size / surface of the sand.

Your best filtering will come with swimming pool sand. It's the size that is important. Sand box sand for the kids might work too, but it is getting too large in size. The more grit, the less effective filtering.
