David reads 500 words in 5 minutes, so that's 100 words per minute.
Chapter two has 1,800 words, so that takes 18 minutes.
Chapter 3 has 4,200 words, so that takes 42 minutes.
18+42 = 60, so it takes one hour (60 minutes) to read both chapters.

It will take one hour.
I like to arrange word problems such that the numbers are easy to work with. Chapters two and three have a total of 6000 words. At David's reading rate he can read 1000 words in 10 minutes. He will finish reading in 6 blocks of 10 minutes each. one hour.
enjoy!

60 minutes,
1800+4200 = 6000
500 in 5 minutes = 100 in 1 minute

1800 + 4200 = 6000 words
6000/500 words per "5 minute segment" = 12 "5 minute segments"
12 * 5 = 60 minutes
This assumes he doesn't go get a Coke or go to the bathroom.
